The One Herbal Tea a Dietitian Drinks Daily to Help With Bloating and Digestion

Sipping on a warm cup of herbal tea when it's chilly outside is one of life's simplest joys. It's so cosy, and it's the perfect way to unwind after a long day, especially since these teas typically don't have caffeine. Beyond that, many herbal teas offer various health benefits, from better digestion to reduced inflammation. We asked a registered dietitian to share her favourite herbal tea, plus a few ways it can improve your gut and overall health.

A dietitian's favourite herbal tea

When it comes to herbal tea, Amy Shapiro, MS, RD, CDN, lead nutritionist at ButcherBox, picks dandelion root tea as her go-to option. "Dandelion root tea has become a genuine daily habit for me, not just something I reach for occasionally," Shapiro explains. "I'll make it hot or cold depending on the season or my craving." Shapiro originally tried dandelion root tea because of the health benefits, specifically citing liver and digestive support, but has kept it in her daily routine because of how it makes her feel. "It just makes me feel good. Not to say I don't use other teas at other times, but this one is my favourite," she says.

Dandelion root tea is also caffeine-free, allowing Shapiro to drink it anytime the cravings hit. "Unlike coffee or black and green tea, it's naturally caffeine-free, so I can drink it any time of day without worrying about sleep disruption or jitters," she says. "And compared to plain water, it gives me something warm and flavourful to sip on that still feels like a wellness ritual rather than just hydration." Shapiro also prefers the flavour of dandelion root tea over other herbal teas. "It has an earthy, slightly bitter flavour (not everyone's favourite, but I love it) that satisfies that warm ritual drink craving for me without any caffeine," she explains.

How dandelion tea supports your health

One of the main reasons Shapiro reaches for dandelion root tea is for its digestive support. "Dandelion root has traditionally been used to stimulate digestion and support healthy bile production, which can help with fat digestion and overall gut comfort," she explains. Dandelion root tea, according to Shapiro, also has a mild diuretic effect, which can help reduce bloating. "It may help reduce water retention and bloating, which is part of why so many people reach for it around that time of month or after a high-sodium day," Shapiro says.

It's also rich in antioxidants and micronutrients. "Dandelion root contains polyphenols and other antioxidant compounds, along with trace amounts of potassium and other minerals," Shapiro says. Plus, per Shapiro, there is research that shows a link between dandelion root tea and liver support. "Some research suggests dandelion root may support liver detoxification pathways, though this research is still emerging," she shares. "I like to look at tea as a supportive habit and an easy way to incorporate the power of herbs regularly."

Who should consider dandelion root tea?

Dandelion root tea can be a helpful addition for anyone looking to support digestion, reduce bloating or add more herbal antioxidants to their day. It's naturally caffeine-free, making it suitable for evening consumption. However, it's not a magic bullet. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are taking medication, it's best to consult a healthcare professional before making it a daily habit. Dandelion can interact with certain medications, including diuretics and lithium. For most healthy adults, though, a daily cup is a gentle, enjoyable way to support gut comfort and overall wellbeing.

The bottom line

Dandelion root tea is Shapiro's daily go-to for good reason: it's caffeine-free, comforting, and offers digestive and antioxidant benefits. Its mild diuretic effect may help with bloating, while its polyphenols and minerals contribute to overall health. Whether you're looking for a new cosy ritual or a tasty addition to your day that has real benefits for your health, dandelion root tea might be a great place to start. Just remember that tea is a supportive habit, not a substitute for a balanced diet and professional medical advice.
